Modern people are addicted to their possessions. Their entire identity is defined by what they wear and collect and surround themselves with. The car they drive, their residence, their art/music/dvd collections, furnishings, cookware, cosmetics, radio/tv stations they listen to. The possessions are their obsessions. Their obsessions are their addictions. They're possessed by their addictions. They're possessed by their possessions.
To be possessed is to be possessed by the demonic. Carnal Knowledge. Carnal desire doesn't just refer to the erotic, it refers to the lust of the eyes for possessions. The alternate titles to Dostoevsky's 1871 novel Demons were The Possessed and The Devils. Dostoevsky was an Orthodox Christian. He was well aware of the spiritual reality of the demonic, as well as demonic possession. Demons was a novel about the Russian anarchist terrorists who are the nineteenth century of the anti-Christian anarchist/ terrorists rampaging all over the Western world.

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.
